How to Measure

Measuring Your Space

Measuring for your project is an important step to correctly estimating material quantities. With proper measurements, we can help calculate how much tile, thinset and grout you will need based on your material choice and desired layout.

What you'll need to get started:

Measuring:

First, take a look at your space. Is it a perfect rectangle, does it bend in and out or around corners? Start by sketching out a basic map of your floor or wall to be measured.

For a floor, take note of doorways, corners around your fireplace mantle and presence of stairs.

When measuring for a kitchen backsplash, be sure to pencil in the windows and where your hood range is (these are usually placed higher up than the upper cabinets are).

As you measure each side, you can fill it in on your drawing.

Because in material estimating, we always need to round up, don’t worry about getting an exact measurement. To the nearest inch is just fine.

Using a camera is also a great way to record specific measurements in hard to reach or see places, such as on the underside of upper kitchen cabinets.

The drawing will not only help to show you where your measurements fall in relation to the space, but also if you’ve left any areas out.

In places like a bathroom shower, or if planning a wainscot, you’ll want to also measure the height of the ceiling. Standard height is 8’, but many variations exist.

Once you’ve finished, step back and get some good photos of your space from each vantage point. If anything was missed, or if you have a space that is hard to put on paper, it will be easier to address during our time in the showroom together.

Happy Measuring!
